"Sabau! Haucha — Wang Yu-pang: Images Speaking Rukai" — Book Donation to After School Association of Taiwan Wutai Base and Rukai Culture Museum

Taiwan, though small, boasts a rich cultural heritage with diverse indigenous groups, fostering our inclusive national character. Among Taiwan's 16 officially recognized indigenous tribes, the Rukai people reside primarily in the same area as After School Association of Taiwan Wutai base in Pingtung, which is sponsored by Shih Wei Navigation.

We recently donated 12 copies of "Sabau! Haucha — Wang Yu-pang: Images Speaking Rukai" to the Wutai Base and Rukai Culture Museum. This initiative aims to preserve and share Rukai cultural memories through the connection of images and text.

"Sabau," a Rukai greeting that conveys multiple meanings such as “Hello,” “Thank you,” and “Well done,” serves as the title of photographer Wang Yu-pang’s book. Wang, who has long documented the Rukai's Haucha tribe, uses authentic images and words to showcase the tribe's vibrant spirit. Through the activity, the teacher from the Wutai Base recalled that some of the children she once mentored were from the Haucha tribe, prompting a visit to reconnect and remind the young ones not to forget their roots.

We hope these efforts encourage tribal children to cherish their historical culture and inspire others to learn about Taiwan's indigenous history. Next time, let's greet each other with "Sabau," acknowledging our shared commitment to preserving local culture.
