Connecting Dreams, Sailing Toward Hope — The 2nd Maritime Career Exploration Day
On August 10, 2026, Shih Wei Navigation, in collaboration with the Keelung Branch of Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), hosted the 2nd Maritime Career Exploration Day, inviting children from the Shenkeng Center of the After School Association of Taiwan to experience an inspiring journey through Keelung Port aboard our passenger ship “Dancewoods No. 1”. For many children from underprivileged families, this was not just a rare opportunity to sail, but also their first glimpse into the world of the maritime world.
The day began with a harbor tour led by our colleagues aboard Dancewoods No. 1. As the ship cruised around Keelung Port, the children explored the city's unique coastal landscape, port facilities, and shipping operations. Watching towering container ships and giant cranes up close, they filled the journey with endless curiosity, imaginative questions, and excited laughter, setting the tone for an unforgettable day.
After the harbor tour, the group walked to the Environmental Education Park operated by the Keelung Branch of TIPC, where the second part of the adventure began.
The children were first introduced to the loading and unloading process of bulk shipping and the basic operations of merchant vessels, transforming complex maritime concepts into engaging, real-life knowledge. This was followed by an environmental safety session led by TIPC's occupational safety instructor, who used interactive teaching materials to demonstrate how oil pollution affects marine ecosystems and how to respond appropriately when pollution is discovered. Through these hands-on activities, the children learned that protecting the marine environment is everyone's responsibility.
To conclude the program, the instructor surprised everyone with a fun customs inspection adventure. Walking through simulated "Departure" and "Arrival" routes, the children experienced passing through metal detectors and customs inspection procedures firsthand. The cheerful chorus of beeping detectors mixed with laughter turned what had once seemed like unfamiliar facilities into exciting learning experiences.
As the event came to an end, we accompanied the children to their meeting point and watched them board their bus home. Their smiling faces and enthusiastic waves through the windows became the warmest memory of the day.
The Marine Career Exploration Day represents more than a collaboration between Shih Wei Navigation and the Keelung Branch of TIPC, but it is a meaningful experience created together with the children of the After School Association of Taiwan.
