From Father to Granddaughter, 41 Years of Maritime Spirit ― Shih Wei Navigation Welcomes M.V. SW Sunbright to Its Fleet as the Third Generation Carries Forward a Legacy of Seafaring

Some ships carry more than cargo; they carry the values and convictions passed down through generations of a family.

In July 2026, Shih Wei Navigation welcomed its newest tonnage, M.V. SW Sunbright, to its fleet at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan. More than a ship delivery ceremony, the occasion marked the continuation of a maritime legacy spanning three generations and 41 years.

Founded in 1985, amid a downturn in the global shipping industry, Shih Wei Navigation was established by Mr. J.D. Lan. Throughout the changing tides of the global shipping industry and the cycles of the market, he navigated fearlessly through challenges, steadfastly upholding the principle of keeping people, ships, cargo, and the environment safe. Guided by a commitment to sustainable development, he led the company steadily through the highs and lows of the industry, while continuing to provide comprehensive services to customers around the world.Forty-one years later, the addition of M.V. SW Sunbright represents not only the growth of the fleet, but also the passing of Shih Wei’s enduring maritime spirit from one generation to the next.

For many years, the honor of christening new vessels have been carried on by women. Today, this cherished tradition has been passed on to the third generation. As Effie, the founder’s granddaughter, gracefully cut the cord holding the champagne bottle, sending it against the vessel’s hull, ribbons of celebration gently filled the air. In that moment, we believe that the honor and emotion of the occasion became the best of messages, carried by soaring white doves to the founder who has watched over and guided Shih Wei throughout the years.

As the ship’s whistle sounded, M.V. SW Sunbright slowly set sail toward the open sea. And so, the journey of Shih Wei Navigation continues. Carrying with us the founder’s original vision and the shared conviction of every member of the Shih Wei family, we will continue sailing toward the next forty years.
