Little drops for Sustainability
Low-Earth Orbit Satellites: Bringing Ship and Shore Within Reach
In the past, the profession of being a seafarer was often associated with prolonged loneliness and emotional distance from family. Due to limitations in communication and information accessibility, seafarers not only carried the responsibilities of their profession while at sea, but also endured the psychological burden of missing their loved ones. However, with the introduction of startlink technology across the Shih Wei Navigation fleet, we have significantly shortened the distance between ship and shore, while also redefining the working environment for seafarers.
Today (2026.05.12), Shih Wei Navigation successfully conducted its first real-time, borderless ship-to-shore exchange through the startlink system, focusing on knowledge related to biofuel. As the saying goes, “To do a good job, one must first have the proper tools.” Once the limitations of traditional communication environments are overcome, smoother knowledge transmission naturally enhances the safety dimension among people, vessels, cargo, and the environment, while also laying a stronger foundation for sustainable operations.
Beyond operational and management benefits, the internet connectivity enabled by startlink also allows seafarers to stay in touch with their families in a more immediate and convenient manner, becoming one of the warmest sources of support during long voyages. When the psychological burden on seafarers is eased, their stability, motivation, and willingness to learn and work are further strengthened, ultimately improving overall work quality and operational safety.
We believe that what startlink enhance is not only signal strength, but also the warmth within every seafarer’s heart. When distance is no longer a barrier, both knowledge and longing can cross the oceans and arrive instantly.
