A Literary Talent at Sea — Second Officer Po-Chiao Su Honored as a 2025 Model Seafarer
Shih Wei Navigation places great importance on talent development, believing that equal emphasis on education and hands-on training forms the foundation of true professional cultivation. This philosophy is perfectly exemplified in Second Officer Po-Chiao Su, who has been awarded the “2025 Model Seafarer” honor by The Preparatory Committee of the 71st Maritime Day.
Since graduating in 2014 from the industry–academia cooperative program jointly established by our company and National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Mr. Su has remained with the company. Starting as a cadet, he advanced step by step through foundational training and rigorous onboard practice, steadily earning his promotion to Second Officer. Along the way, he has accumulated not only higher rank, but also greater professionalism and responsibility. What has remained unchanged, however, is his natural-born sense of humor.
Life at sea is defined by long voyages, shifting weather conditions, and demanding workloads. Yet Mr. Su consistently maintains an optimistic spirit and an affable wit, bringing joy and positive energy to the crew. Well liked by all, he has a remarkable ability to find shining moments amid routine duties and to document the unique stories that belong to seafarers.
During his first two years onboard, while others were cautiously focused on transforming textbook knowledge into practical experience, he spent his spare time repainting his cabin into a marine-themed “aquarium.” When the vessel sailed to snow-covered countries, he enthusiastically turned the snow on deck into what he jokingly called the twentieth crew member. His easygoing nature and ability to find contentment wherever he is have transformed life on long ocean voyages into more than just work—it has become a collection of treasured memories and meaningful experiences.
Mr. Su’s recognition as a Model Seafarer is not only an affirmation of his professional competence, but also a testament to the success of our industry–academia collaboration program. We look forward to seeing him continue to write his seafaring journey—using his original aspirations as his pen and his passion as his ink—as he sails forward, riding the winds and waves toward new horizons.
